Transition Program

Our 2021/2022 transition program has been designed to support our future year 7 and 8 students in their move to high school. This program includes opportunities for students and parents to connect with our school, through parent information evenings and transition events.

In addition to these events and experiences, our staff work closely with primary schools to gain information and data about all students transitioning to school. This includes students completing a ‘Transition Profile Task’ where students create a video about themselves as learners. This information enables our teachers to provide personalised learning experiences for our transitioning students.

Digital Transition Session

The Digital Transition Session is designed specifically for 2022 year 7 and 8 students. During the session students hear from current students and key staff who will share information about the transition to Norwood Morialta High School.

Laptop Program

Norwood Morialta High School is committed to providing a world class learning experience that prepares our students to become active global citizens. Our learning programs and future focused pedagogies promote innovation, challenge and creativity through authentic connections and the integration of technologies.

The NMHS laptop program provides students with the opportunity to experience education enriched through technology. When technology integration in the classroom is seamless and thoughtful, students are not only more engaged, but they also begin to take more control over their own learning. At NMHS our students engage in a range of digital learning platforms via their laptop to collaborate with peers, access digital content and develop as respectful global citizens.

At Norwood Morialta High School (NMHS) it is an expectation that each student has access to a laptop to enable them to fully engage in their learning to complete set tasks, research and investigate, as well as learning collaboratively and virtually at any time. We understand some families may have different devices for their child to use, however it is essential that students have the same recommended device to enable consistent in-class learning support, technical assistance and the ability to charge devices at school (using school-charging stations). In addition, students and their laptops will be fully supported by our ICT Service Desk with extensive technical support and a repair and drop-off centre.

The device selected for students in 2022 is the LENOVO ThinkPad L13. Specifications and ordering information is available via this link.

Transition Profile Task

Transitioning to high school can be a challenging time for students as they begin their journey at a new school. This involves students creating their own profile with information they would like our teachers to know about them as individuals and learners.

The due date for this profile task has been extended and is now due on Monday 25 October 2021 and can be uploaded via the link below:

Click here to upload your profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

When would be the best time to order the laptop?
You are able to purchase the laptop at any point from now but please be aware that it could take up to 12 weeks to be delivered and that the warranty for the laptop starts from the date of purchase, not the date of delivery.

Where can I find out more information about the school laptop?
The information regarding the Lenovo laptop is available on our school website here: Norwood Morialta High School Order Portal – LWT.

Do we have to have the exact same recommended laptop, or can it just be the same brand?
Families are required to purchase the specified laptop. This laptop has been carefully selected with the correct specifications to meet the needs of our students. Other models of the same brand may not meet these specifications. This also enables our IT team to provide technical support in a timely fashion to minimise the impact of technical difficulties on learning.

Will the school zone be changing and are there any other requirements relating to this?
The Minister will be releasing the new zone for consultation within the next few days. We will share this on our website when this is available. Families need to be living within our zone at the time of enrolment with at least a 12-month lease.

What are the opportunities for students in the performing arts (music and drama)?
Students are able to study a music immersion program for a semester in both Year 7 and Year 8 or a Performing Arts pathway (a term of Drama and a term of Music). The music immersion program is geared towards the development of foundational skills and knowledge, with students selecting an instrument to study through IMS lessons.

You will be grouped into your Connect Class on your Transition Days in week 8 which will give you a great opportunity to develop now friendships and connections with your peers.

Will people from the same school be in the same class?

You will be grouped into your Connect Class on your Transition Days in week 8 which will give you a great opportunity to develop now friendships and connections with your peers.

All students in 2022 will be situated at the campus on The Parade.

Where can I find more information about the school uniform?
Our uniform policy can be found on our school website here: Our Uniform | Norwood Morialta High School (nmhs.sa.edu.au).

Will year 7s receive a student card?
Within the first few weeks of the school year all students will be photographed and then supplied with a student card. This card will be used for identification, borrowing of resources and access to printers and photocopiers around the school.

What date will year 7s start in 2022?
Our start day for Year 7s next year is yet to be confirmed. This information will be supplied at your Transition Days in Week 8, Term 4.

Does picking music immersion put the student in a music ‘stream’ or PLG away from their friends? Or does the music student just go off to a music lesson while their friends/PLG go to an alternate arts class?
Music Immersion allows a student to study music for their semester of Performing Arts (rather than a term of Music and a term of Drama). All students will have different classes for their elective subjects that will be a mixture of students in their year level that have selected those subjects, rather than their Connect class.

The year 7 to 8 transition dates lists the 2022 camp dates for the year 7s – will the year 8s be on camp at the same time or different dates?
The Year 8 Camp will be at a different time to the Year 7 Camp and will be held in Week 4 of Term 1 – the exact date will depend on which class your child is in as they will be staggered across the week.

What scientific calculator is needed for students in Accelerated STEM?
Students in Accelerated STEM should obtain the FX82AU+2 2nd edition calculator but if they really wanted to, they could get the graphics calculator FXCG50AU which is what all senior students use. All middle school mathematics teachers are comfortable with the use of the FX82AU however they may not be with the FXCG50AU.

Will there be any writing (poetry, narrative, etc) competitions?
At NMHS we hold a number of competitions and other events over the year, mostly external so that the students get to compete with or against students from other schools. The main competitions are as follows:

  • The Young Writers Award – prose or poetry entries and compete against students in the same or adjacent year levels.
  • SAETA Spring Poetry competition.
  • Education Perfect English Championships.

We also offer other events such as Meet the Writers – an opportunity for selected students to attend a conference of published authors presenting on aspects of the writing process.

Is it possible for me to join the STEM program during year 8 or at the end of year 8?
During the school year the STEM program leader calls for nominations from teachers and requests from students to enter the STEM programs. This normally runs at the end of term 1 which allows for students to identified and data to be obtained to support the nominations and a possible shift into the STEM program.

Is Dungeons & Dragons a co-curricular activity?
Not currently. However, later this year we will send out a survey to students to register interest in extracurricular activities and clubs. You can also make suggestions for new clubs to be formed in 2022.

What e-sports are offered and what do you have to do if you want to participate in year 7?
