Transition Program

Our 2021/2022 transition program has been designed to support our future year 7 and 8 students in their move to high school. This program includes opportunities for students and parents to connect with our school, through parent information evenings and transition events.

In addition to these events and experiences, our staff work closely with primary schools to gain information and data about all students transitioning to school. This includes students completing a ‘Transition Profile Task’ where students create a video about themselves as learners. This information enables our teachers to provide personalised learning experiences for our transitioning students.

Uniform

Norwood Morialta High School takes great pride in its uniform. All students are expected to wear their uniform appropriately at all times.

We believe that the wearing of the uniform not only creates a strong sense of identity within our school and wider community, but also supports the safety and wellbeing of our students.

Our school is proud to offer a wide range of uniform items for all students. We are currently expanding this selection and will be including the following new school uniform items for 2022:

  • Middle school rugby tops (for students in Years 7 – 9 only)
  • Senior school rugby tops (for students in Years 10 – 12 only)
  • Sports tracksuit (track pants and jacket)
  • Spray jacket
  • Puffer jacket.

Please note that in 2022 all Year 7 and 8 students will undertake PE for the full year and will be required to wear their PE uniform to school on the days they have their lessons. More information will be shared in term 4, along with images of these new items.

Laptop Program

Norwood Morialta High School is committed to providing a world class learning experience that prepares our students to become active global citizens. Our learning programs and future focused pedagogies promote innovation, challenge and creativity through authentic connections and the integration of technologies.

The NMHS laptop program provides students with the opportunity to experience education enriched through technology. When technology integration in the classroom is seamless and thoughtful, students are not only more engaged, but they also begin to take more control over their own learning. At NMHS our students engage in a range of digital learning platforms via their laptop to collaborate with peers, access digital content and develop as respectful global citizens.

At Norwood Morialta High School (NMHS) it is an expectation that each student has access to a laptop to enable them to fully engage in their learning to complete set tasks, research and investigate, as well as learning collaboratively and virtually at any time. We understand some families may have different devices for their child to use, however it is essential that students have the same recommended device to enable consistent in-class learning support, technical assistance and the ability to charge devices at school (using school-charging stations). In addition, students and their laptops will be fully supported by our ICT Service Desk with extensive technical support and a repair and drop-off centre.

The device selected for students in 2022 is the LENOVO ThinkPad L13. Specifications and ordering information is available via this link.

Transition Profile Task

Transitioning to high school can be a challenging time for students as they begin their journey at a new school. To support this transition and help our teachers know our students before they arrive, all future year 6 and 7 students will complete a Transition Profile. This involves students creating their own profile with information they would like our teachers to know about them as individuals and learners.

The due date for this profile task has been extended and is now due on Monday 25 October 2021 and can be uploaded via the link below:

Click here to upload your profile.

For further information and instructions for the task please see click this link: NMHS Transition Profile Scaffold.

When would be the best time to order the laptop?
You are able to purchase the laptop at any point from now but please be aware that it could take up to 12 weeks to be delivered and that the warranty for the laptop starts from the date of purchase, not the date of delivery.

Where can I find out more information about the school laptop?
The information regarding the Lenovo laptop is available on our school website here: Norwood Morialta High School Order Portal – LWT.

Do we have to have the exact same recommended laptop, or can it just be the same brand?
Families are required to purchase the specified laptop. This laptop has been carefully selected with the correct specifications to meet the needs of our students. Other models of the same brand may not meet these specifications. This also enables our IT team to provide technical support in a timely fashion to minimise the impact of technical difficulties on learning.

Will the school zone be changing and are there any other requirements relating to this?
The Minister will be releasing the new zone for consultation within the next few days. We will share this on our website when this is available. Families need to be living within our zone at the time of enrolment with at least a 12-month lease.

What are the opportunities for students in the performing arts (music and drama)?
Students are able to study a music immersion program for a semester in both Year 7 and Year 8 or a Performing Arts pathway (a term of Drama and a term of Music). The music immersion program is geared towards the development of foundational skills and knowledge, with students selecting an instrument to study through IMS lessons.

As students’ progress, increased flexibility and opportunities arise allowing them to explore additional areas of interest or passion within music.

Through the school’s capital works program, we will have a newly redeveloped music space which includes two dedicated music rooms as well as 5 smaller practice spaces.

Do we get to choose one person (from our year) we would like in our class next year and when will we find out who will be in our class?
Your primary school will provide us with a range of information about you to help with our class placement processes, including who you work well with in class. You will be grouped into your Connect Class on your Transition Days in week 8 which will give you a great opportunity to develop now friendships and connections with your peers.

Will people from the same school be in the same class?
The NMHS Transition Team will use a range of information provided by your Primary School to help with class placement processes, including who you work well with in class. You will most likely know some of your classmates but will meet many new people as well. You will be grouped into your Connect Class on your Transition Days in week 8 which will give you a great opportunity to develop now friendships and connections with your peers.

What is the due date for our transition profile task? How strict are the teachers at NMHS on mobile phones and can we turn them in at the front office?
The Transition Profile Task is due on by the 11th of October 2021. Attached is a copy of the Transition Profile task with the guiding questions for you to consider in your response.

Teachers at NMHS strive to uphold the policies and procedures of the school to maintain a safe and positive learning environment that allows all students to grow and succeed. It is important that students, teachers and families work together to support this.

To change a language selection please contact our Transition Manager, Paula Benson on (08) 83650455. Paula can support you to make this change to your enrolment information.

There will also be lots of friendly teachers to support you as you get settled in.

Is it possible to undertake the ICAS or Premiere’s Reading Challenge in high school?
Students at NMHS will have the opportunity to participate in ICAS and Premier Reading Challenge through their English classes. If there are particular competitions or challenges you’d like to be a part of please let us know.

Will we be allowed to customise our lockers?
We are excited about the facilities we will enjoy in our new Middle School Building in 2022. We will expect that students will take care of these facilities, including lockers, and keep them in good condition. Any personalisation of the inside of your lockers must be non-permanent and easily removable so that they may be left good condition for the following year.

Are there any rules about decorating/personalising your laptop eg decorating the outside of the laptop and/or personalising the homescreen?
When you purchase your own laptop, you can personalise it as it belongs to you. However, any personalisation made must be appropriate for the school environment and must not contain any offensive language or images.

Are there any late starts/early finishes? I’m in STEM and Italian Immersion, what connect class will I be in?
There will be a late start each Wednesday. On this day school staff will be engaging in professional learning before the commencement of the school day for students.

Connect classes are yet to be formed, however it is likely that you will be placed in the STEM enrichment Connect Class and will take Italian as a language and join the Italian Immersion class for Humanities. This will be confirmed later this year.

All students in 2022 will be situated at the campus on The Parade.

Where can I find more information about the school uniform?
Our uniform policy can be found on our school website here: Our Uniform | Norwood Morialta High School (nmhs.sa.edu.au).

Our start day for Year 7s next year is yet to be confirmed. This information will be supplied at your Transition Days in Week 8, Term 4.

Does picking music immersion put the student in a music ‘stream’ or PLG away from their friends? Or does the music student just go off to a music lesson while their friends/PLG go to an alternate arts class?
Music Immersion allows a student to study music for their semester of Performing Arts (rather than a term of Music and a term of Drama). All students will have different classes for their elective subjects that will be a mixture of students in their year level that have selected those subjects, rather than their Connect class.

The year 7 to 8 transition dates lists the 2022 camp dates for the year 7s – will the year 8s be on camp at the same time or different dates?
The Year 8 Camp will be at a different time to the Year 7 Camp and will be held in Week 4 of Term 1 – the exact date will depend on which class your child is in as they will be staggered across the week.

What scientific calculator is needed for students in Accelerated STEM?
Students in Accelerated STEM should obtain the FX82AU+2 2nd edition calculator but if they really wanted to, they could get the graphics calculator FXCG50AU which is what all senior students use. All middle school mathematics teachers are comfortable with the use of the FX82AU however they may not be with the FXCG50AU.

Will there be any writing (poetry, narrative, etc) competitions?
At NMHS we hold a number of competitions and other events over the year, mostly external so that the students get to compete with or against students from other schools. The main competitions are as follows:

  • The Young Writers Award – prose or poetry entries and compete against students in the same or adjacent year levels.
  • SAETA Spring Poetry competition.
  • Education Perfect English Championships.

We also offer other events such as Meet the Writers – an opportunity for selected students to attend a conference of published authors presenting on aspects of the writing process.

Is it possible for me to join the STEM program during year 8 or at the end of year 8?
During the school year the STEM program leader calls for nominations from teachers and requests from students to enter the STEM programs. This normally runs at the end of term 1 which allows for students to identified and data to be obtained to support the nominations and a possible shift into the STEM program.

Not currently. However, later this year we will send out a survey to students to register interest in extracurricular activities and clubs. You can also make suggestions for new clubs to be formed in 2022.
