Special Interest Programs

As a desirable secondary school, we are proud to offer three unique Special Interest Programs that have selection requirements. Please refer to the information below for more details of these programs. Please note that applications have now closed for 2022.

Rowing Program

Students with an aptitude for rowing have an opportunity to develop their skills, compete in regattas and excel in the sport. Successful students who gain entry to the Special Interest Rowing Program will commit themselves to rowing competition for a minimum of three seasons.

Italian Immersion Program

Students undertake an integrated program in Italian and Humanities where they learn Italian through Humanities. They develop a high level of competence in the language and gain a deeper understanding of culture. Students will have an opportunity to study Stage 1 Italian in Year 10.

STEM Programs

In 2022 Norwood Morialta High School will be offering the Accelerated STEM program for new Year 8 students and introducing the STEM Enrichment program for new Year 7 students. Please read more information below…

STEM Enrichment Program

The STEM Enrichment Program is available to 2022 Year 7 students and supports learners to complete their middle schooling with a strong focus on inquiry and integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.

Accelerated STEM Program

This program supports students with a strong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to complete their middle schooling in 2 years. The program has a focus on inquiry and integrated, authentic STEM learning across all subjects.

Rowing

Rowing Overview 

As one of Adelaide’s leading public schools, Norwood Morialta High School (NMHS) is focused on delivering a Special Interest Rowing Program that will provide each student with the opportunity to achieve success. With students from Years 8 -12 actively training and representing the School, rowing is a popular summer sport that encourages teamwork and leadership in addition to developing fitness and work ethics. It is important at Norwood Morialta High School that we not only develop our rowing students as quality athletes but also as hard-working and committed students.  

 

Features of the Special Interest Rowing Program 

The Norwood Morialta High School Special Interest Rowing Program incorporates a talent identification selection process whereby students from within and outside the NMHS zone can apply to enrol at the School. Student selection will be based on their performance during the selection trials and their academic achievement to date. The selection trials will incorporate a variety of different fitness tests including a 20 metre shuttle run and a 500 metre ergo time trial.  

Successful students who gain entry to the Special Interest Rowing Program will commit themselves to rowing competition until the end of Year 10. This involvement will take precedence over any other sporting/extra-curricular activity.  

The Special Interest Rowing Program operates alongside the Rowing Club and all students enrolled at the School are able to join the Rowing Club and take part in the rowing as a school summer sport in Years 8 -12. 

 

Facilities and Resources 

Norwood Morialta High School Rowing Club has two boat sheds: one located on the River Torrens near Montefiore Hill Road and a shared facility at the West Lakes Regatta Course. The School has a growing fleet of boats and access to fitness facilities within the campus. 

 

Curriculum and Pedagogy 

Students who are successful in gaining entry into the Norwood Morialta High School Special Interest Rowing Program will participate in intensive rowing units during terms 1 and 4. Terms 2 and 3 see students undertake the core PE curriculum under the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP) and Australian Curriculum requirements. 

Practical (Rowing Units) 

Lessons and training sessions include: 

      • Development and application of rowing skills 
      • Fitness and conditioning 
      • Competition/racing strategies 
      • Group dynamics/team building

Theory 

Students will study the following rowing specific content: 

      • Introduction to rowing 
      • Principles of training 
      • Leadership/teamwork 
      • Health/wellbeing/resilience 
      • Factors affecting performance 
      • Fitness/performance analysis 
      • Rowing and technology.
Training 

Rowers learn boat handling and rowing skills in both scull and sweep boats and improve their general fitness. They have opportunities to row in a number of boat classes including single sculls, double sculls, pairs, quads, fours and eights. All rowers are expected to be fully committed to the sport, as absences from training sessions and regattas and failure to maintain or improve fitness levels will impact on the rest of the team. A training camp is held on the River Murray in September and also at West Lakes in late January. Consequently, students and their parents must be aware, before joining the program, of the time, financial and physical commitments required.  

For Learn to Row (Year 7), Junior (Year 8) and Intermediate (Year 9) crews, on-water training takes place twice a week on the River Torrens. Rowers are also expected to attend scheduled fitness sessions that take on campus. 

 

Competition 

Rowers compete in Rowing South Australia regattas which are held most Saturdays in terms 4 and 1, mostly at West Lakes. Other regattas are held on the River Torrens in the City, at Mannum, Murray Bridge and Port Adelaide. Crew members are required to attend all regattas in which their crew is competing. 

Students also have the opportunity to represent Norwood Morialta High School at the Australian Rowing Championships which are held in March in various locations.  

 

Parent Involvement 

The Special Interest Rowing Program prides itself on a culture of volunteerism and parental involvement. There are numerous opportunities for parental interaction and involvement both at regattas and at social activities organised by the Club. This can be either through joining the Rowing Committee, transportation of equipment, or assisting at regattas, fundraising and social events.

Italian Immersion Program

The Italian Immersion Program reflects Norwood Morialta High School’s strong commitment to internationalism by recognizing the importance of language learning in developing global citizens. The Italian Immersion Program supports students in Years 8 and 9 to develop high levels of language proficiency and intercultural understanding, whilst offering students a unique and explicit approach to exploring concepts and content in the Humanities program.  

 

Features of the Immersion Italian Program: 

In the Immersion Program students study an Italian course as well as learning Humanities through Italian as an integrated program in years 8 and 9. During their Italian language classes they learn new vocabulary and grammar that will facilitate their understanding of the Humanities course. It is anticipated that these students will then study SACE Stage 1 Italian in year 10. 

 

Student Commitment 

Prospective students must be motivated with a desire to excel and be challenged.  The students need to be able to work and respond well in challenging learning environments, enjoy taking risks, have strong problem-solving skills and be open to new ideas.  It is also essential that prospective students have strong literacy skills.  

It is not a prerequisite that students have studied Italian at primary school or are of Italian background.  

Students are expected to commit to the full two-year program. 

 

Curriculum and Pedagogy 

The Immersion Program seeks to challenge students through an integrated Language and Humanities program, promoting communication, collaboration and connections with local and global communities. As part of the authentic teaching and learning experience, students from this program will also have the opportunity to visit our sister-city school in Italy. 

The Italian Immersion Program is aligned to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Framework and the Australian Curriculum requirements.   

Students selected for this program are placed together in the same Italian and Humanities classes. The students study 5 lessons of Italian and 5 lessons of Humanities a week, as is the case with all the year 8 and year 9 students at NMHS. 

 

Benefits for Students 

This model is based on a strong educational foundation and substantial research in the area of Immersion Education in Languages. Research has shown that students: 

  • achieve relatively high levels of second language proficiency 
  • improve their literacy skills 
  • develop a range of learning and thinking skills, including divergent thinking and problem-solving skills 
  • attain high levels of functional proficiency in the immersion language while at the same time achieving academically 
  • develop deeper intercultural understandings.

Immersion programs are common overseas and are also offered in other states of Australia.  
They enable students to learn the language, in this case Italian, through content, as happens in real life.  It leads to a more engaging and relevant process of language acquisition for motivated students.

STEM Enrichment Program

The STEM Enrichment Program is available to 2022 Year 7 students and supports learners to complete their middle schooling with a strong focus on inquiry and integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning. Through enrichment of STEM learning, students will gain a deeper understanding of concepts across Science, Mathematics and Technology and experience opportunities for application of knowledge and skill to real world problems. 

The program seeks to develop futures-orientated capabilities, promote entrepreneurial opportunities and extend creative, higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers embrace challenge-based learning approaches that promote inquiry, collaboration and connections with the local and global communities.   

 

Features of the STEM Enrichment Program: 
  • Motivated, high-achieving students are able to work with their intellectual and social peers in the same STEM class 
  • Students participating in the STEM Enrichment Program will undertake a range of subjects together that are all underpinned by a connection through STEM and interdisciplinary learning. There is a strong focus on problem-solving, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking 
  • Students engage in learning that develops an entrepreneurial mindset, with a strong focus on new ways of thinking, entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and perspectives  
  • Students engage with industry partners to develop a greater awareness of career pathways in STEM and Entrepreneurialism 
  • The school has a proud tradition of academic excellence and graduates achieve outstanding results in high-end STEM subjects.

It is expected that students involved in the STEM Enrichment Program will:

  • Intend completing SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) at Norwood Morialta High School 
  • Intend studying Mathematics, Science and/or Technology subjects in senior years 
  • Participate in national competitions, STEM related extension activities and excursions 
  • Contribute to the school’s wider co-curricular activities and leadership programs 
  • Uphold the school’s values and actively promote the program to the wider school community. 

 

Curriculum and Pedagogy 

The STEM Enrichment Program is aligned to the Australian Curriculum requirements and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years framework. All subjects reflect interdisciplinary approaches with an emphasis on three STEM pathways including: aeronautics, environmental science and sustainability, computer science and engineering, as well as integrating authentic industry and community links.  

The selected STEM Enrichment Program students are placed together in a designated class and engage in all classes together except Languages and the Arts, where they will be able to make subject choices. Students may apply to study the Italian immersion Program as well as the STEM Enrichment Program.  

Student will be supported by a dedicated STEM teacher who provides mentoring to meet individual student’s needs.  Teachers are specially selected to teach in this program, undertake action research and are committed to implementing contemporary and innovative teaching and learning practices. The program and learning experiences are enhanced by our partnerships with local industry and academic partners.

The STEM Enrichment Program provides opportunities for students to personalise their learning pathways after completion of the 3 year program. Students will have the option to continue their STEM studies through the following pathways. Student progress and engagement is closely monitored. The school will develop an individual education plan for each student in consultation with students, parents and teachers. Learning experiences will be personalised which may involve further tailored enrichment, extension or acceleration to another year level for one or more subjects.

The Accelerated STEM Program supports students to complete their middle schooling in two years with a strong focus on inquiry and integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.
